Students will receive comprehensive training to become a Cardiac Care Technician in a hospital or clinic. The ability to read and recognize heart rhythms is the main function of the cardiac care technician. Students will receive hands-on experience in interpreting heart rhythms and arrhythmias. In this 80-hour course students receive comprehensive training to become an EKG Technician in hospitals, physician offices and clinics. Topics include anatomy and physiology of the heart, mechanics of the EKG machine, and interpretation of an EKG. The course consists of 60 hours of classroom training and 20 hours of clinical training. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology (minimum grade of C). Student must submit the following to program manager PRIOR to registration: a current background check within 30 days of start date of class - no drug charges within 5 yrs and no violence charges (any kind) within 10 years. On completion of this 51-hour course, students should be able to follow universal precautions, tie tourniquets, identify veins, and demonstrate knowledge and use of necessary equipment necessary for drawing blood. Students will be able to identify appropriate tubes and labels for tests, prep the site, perform venipuncture and finger sticks, and administer bedside glucose. The student is not certified after this course--in order to qualify for a cetrifying exam the student must complete 100 blood draws and 25 finger sticks. Clinical rotations will be performed in local hospitals and offices during daytime hours.
